The Hinton Alstar Heat peewee 1 hockey team and the Hinton Gus’s Pizza Gladiators ran the table at its host tourney Nov. 1 – 3 to earn gold medals and a couple of pretty awesome candy trophies.
The Heat scored five unanswered goals for a 5-2 win over Drayton Valley that capped off the weekend’s gold medal run.
Jack Blinkhorn opened the scoring for Hinton in the gold medal game with a first-period goal after Drayton Valley built a 2-0 lead. Ethan Viney had a pair of goals to lead the way while Ben Pratt and Jacob Thompson also scored for Hinton.
Thompson and Joshua Sorenson added a pair of assists each, Aiden Durocher and Jared Carré had one assist each and goalies Carter Lehoux and James MacKay combined to make 23 stops in net for Hinton.
The gold medal game was actually a rematch of the opening game of the tournament, when five different players scored to lead the Heat to a 5-3 win.
Carter Lypkie, Wyatt Malo, Cohen Mumby, Carré and Sorenson all scored, while Viney had a pair of assists and Malo, Durocher, Sorenson, Carré and Blinkhorn had one assist each.
MacKay and Lehoux combined for 23 saves.
Lucas McDonald had a hat-trick and Austin Kile had a four-assist game as Hinton rolled over Millwoods by a 12-2 score in the squad’s second round-robin game.
Hinton’s third game was an 8-3 win over St. Albert.
The Gladiators dominated in its gold medal game, riding Marek Lehoux’s five goal performance to an 11-1 win over Confederation.
Corbyn Donkin and Ryder Kulbacki also had a pair of goals and Morgan Thomas and Tye Fellows added one goal each. Sutter Hill and Cohen Potts added a pair of assists, while Luke Hore, Liam Parker and Reece Musselman had one assist each. Aizik Gomuwka made 28 stops in the win.
The wide open win was a stark difference from the one-goal difference in their round robin game, a 3-2 win for Hinton. Donkin, Fellows and Lehoux scored for Hinton in that win while Gomuwka made 22 saves.
Parker and Lehoux scored two goals each in an 8-3 round robin win over the Spruce Shamrocks, and Justin Bartziokas, Tristan Tymchyshyn, Donkin and Lehoux had one goal each.
Hinton trailed Drayton 3-2 at the first intermission of its other round robin game, but made a late push with four third-period goals to win 7-4.
Fellows and Lehoux had a pair of goals in the win, while Thomas, Hore and Parker had one goal each. Gomuwka made 17 stops in the win.
The Gladiators are at home again this coming weekend with a pair of league games Nov. 9 at 2:45 pm against Fort McMurray and Nov. 10 at 1:15 pm against Barrhead.
The Heat also have a league home game this weekend, hosting Edson on Nov. 9 at 2:45 pm before heading to Edson the next day.
