The Hinton McDonald’s Nighthawks atom hockey squad needed to start strong Jan. 24 in Game 2 of their provincial tournament series against Drayton Valley.

Mission accomplished.

Hinton dropped the opening game of the total-goal series by a 4-1 score, and needed to win by at least three goals in Game 2 at home. Hinton built a 6-1 lead after the first period and never looked back in a dominant 10-2 win.

Forrest Kilthau had four goals for Hinton, and Ty Kapatch added two of his own.

Griffin Lepage had a goal and two assists, Chase Jahnke had a goal and an assist and Ryker Michie and Landon Dormuth had the other Hinton goals. Chance Thompson and Nicholas Johnson had one assist each for Hinton.

Goalies Rogue Smith and Brayden Daniels made a combined 27 saves in split duty between the pipes.

Hinton now turns their attention to its Round 2 opponent, Athabasca.

The teams play Game 1 on Jan. 31 in Athabasca and return to Hinton for Game 2 at 12:15 pm the following day, Feb. 1.
